New drive in theater open near Charlotte

While drive in movie theaters may seem like something from a bygone era, in Kings Mountain near Charlotte, at least one will be up and running this summer.

Owner Preston Brown has opened the Hounds drive-In. He noted that its 50-foot-high and 100-foot-wide screen is the largest of its kind in the area and perhaps even the whole country. It has been built on the grounds of the former Hounds Campground, which was owned by Brown’s family. They had run the Joy Theater until 1980.

All of the structures and facilities at the drive in have been built from scratch. It has room for up to 500 vehicles, and has been built to resemble this style of theater that experienced its heyday back in the 1960s. The cost to catch a movie has been set at $12 per carload, which makes it a more economical choice than a typical indoor cinema, and it will offer first-run movies. It will screen two pictures each on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with the possibility of weeknights being added once the schools are on break for the summer.
