The installation of the tracks for Charlotte’s 9.3 mile long extension to its Blue Line is complete, and now the work has begun on the construction of the stations that will serve its ridership.
In total, 11 of the stations are being built between UNC Charlotte and the Ninth Street in the uptown district. The foundations for these structures are being built either below or at ground level, and will be the one of the first tangible Signs the public will have of the progress of the project.
The foundations for the UNC Charlotte and J.W. Clay Boulevard stops were completed in December, while those at Tom Hunter and University City Boulevard are still being worked on. Grading is currently underway at the future site of the McCullough station.
Along with the construction work, the rail cars for the extension have begun to arrive. They are coming in from California, and each will be tested before it is considered ready for use. They can provide seating for 68 passengers and each has both exterior and interior cameras, and also four bike racks. The services of a poster printing company can be utilized to create advertising Posters or artwork for use inside the train cars.
The streets that had been closed for the installation of the tracks are now open for use again. However, some may still need to be closed from time to time as the work progresses.
