Charlotte celebrates freedom at festival

Residents in Charlotte can celebrate freedom and equality at the upcoming 17th Annual Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas.

During the four-day event, there will be a day camp for children along with speakers and entertainment. Crafts, a drum circle, an exercise session, choir performances, and a ‘fish fry’ are some of the highlights of the event.

Juneteenth marks the day when slavery ended, so the festival is a time to remember this historic event. By celebrating the day, the Festival of the Carolinas hopes to preserve a rich heritage, publicly acknowledge the importance of freedom, and unify different cultures.

Pape Ndiaye established the House of Africa and, for the past 17 years, the organization has hosted the celebration. In addition, it paved the way for the Juneteenth Foundation, a non-profit organization that gives yearly scholarships and helps provide shelter for people in need. Overall, the establishment tries to help the community as much as possible.

Various volunteer positions and vendor opportunities are available at the festival. Those who are interested can sign up or fill out an application on the Juneteenth of the Carolinas website.

The event takes place from June 12th to June 15th, from 10:00am until 10:00pm at Independence Park, located at 300 Hawthorne Lane. In order to spread the word about the festival, the event organizers may have used a local Print company to make Flyers and Banners.
