St. Charles hosts annual ice festival

It is once again almost time for Fete De Glace, downtown St. Charles’ annual ice carving competition.

The day sees ice carvers using hot irons, chainsaws, knives, grinders and chisels to sculpt 260lb blocks of ice into sparkling creations. There will be outdoor fire pits and coffee and hot chocolate to keep both spectators and carvers warm and plenty of shops to explore. Local restaurants will be serving breakfast and lunch.

Team competition will be in the morning and individual carvers will take over the afternoon. Attendees are invited to vote for their favorite sculptures in the People’s Choice award. Awards will be passed out at 3:30 pm.

To give new attendees some idea of what to expect, last year’s winning team created a dragon, second place was a Pikachu Ski Ball and third place was a rhino. Mr. Hamamura, the winner of the single block class, sculpted a Phoenix. Second place went to Mr. Russel who submitted a piece called “Howling to the Moon” and third place went to Mr. Willis’s “Nice Ice Baby.”

Professional photographers that get good shots of ice sculptures like these often take the pictures to Stationery printers to be made into note cards or used in Letterheads.

This year’s Fete De Glace will be Saturday, January 30 from 10:00 am until 3:30 pm on the 100 and 200 blocks on North Main Street.
