St. Charles goes to the ice

Fete de Glace is just around the corner, and the competition this year looks set to be fierce.

Ice carvers around the area will be gathering to change large blocks of ice into ice sculptures using only chisels, chainsaws, knives and grinders. Competition will be in two categories – Two-person ‘Master’ teams and ‘Individual’. Winners are chosen by popular vote.

The Masters competition takes place in the morning. Each team will be given five slabs of crystalline ice totaling 1500lb and three hours to finish. Teams will be using their own designs, and winning sculptures last year had titles like Dragon, Shooting for the Moon, and Trouble in Paradise

After noon, individual carvers will each be presented with one 300lb block of ice and also get three hours to complete their projects. Again, carvers will be designing their own pieces and dragons tend to be very popular. Last year, Naomi Hamamura won first place for her ice dragon. Harvey Russell and Eric Snider used motion concepts – rising and leaping – for their second and third place pieces.

Winners in competitions such as this usually take pictures of their temporary masterpieces and take the photos to local printing services for Copies or for poster printing.

Fete de Glace will take place January 26 from 9:30 am until 3:30 pm. All ice sculptures will stay on display in downtown St. Charles on Main Street between the 200 and 100 blocks until 3:30 pm, when the winners will be announced.
