Steve Ehlmann, the St. Charles County Executive, selected McCulloch for the position following the unexpected retirement announcement of Tim Lohmar last month.
The duration of McCulloch's appointment is until December 2024. He has expressed his intention to contact St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner's Office to provide any help needed following the resignation of multiple assistant prosecutors from her office.
In a statement, McCullough said:
“As a police officer, I understand victims; I understand people sometimes do dumb things. You have to know the difference between good people that do dumb things and mean people that do mean things, and that’s what basically I’m going to look at.”
McCulloch, who will no doubt be updating his Business Cards to reflect his new position, intends to personally handle some of the high-profile cases from beginning to end. He emphasized the significance of being personally involved and wanted the public to recognize that he is tough on crime. However, he also stated his intention to evaluate each case independently.
McCulloch's predecessor, Tim Lohmar, made the announcement of his resignation in a written statement, citing the demanding nature of the job as taking a toll on his family, health, and overall well-being, despite being in the middle of his elected term.
