It will soon be time again when North Main Street will turn into a sparkling avenue with ice sculptures in Fete De Glace, St. Charles’ annual ice carving competition.
Toward the end of January, two blocks of North Main Street will be filled with ice carvers creating their masterpieces from single blocks of ice each weighing 260lb during the afternoon. Teams of ice sculpture artists will opt to show off their skills by shaping five blocks of ice into mammoth sculptures in the morning. All artists will be using everything from grinders, chisels, knives, cold spray, and chainsaws to get the desired effects.
Passersby can watch the progress as they stroll passed the carvers, warm up with hot chocolate and coffee at the outdoor fire pits, and wander in and out of the local shops to stay warm. Many will eat lunch or dinner at local restaurants. Everyone is invited to vote for their favorites for the People’s Choice Award. Winners will be announced at the end of the event.
Towns that sponsor events like this often have photographers onsite taking pictures that will go to local Print shops, and be part of the brochure printing for next year’s visitor guides.
Fete De Glace will be January 25, from 9:30 am until 3:30 pm along 100 -200 N. Main Street.
