PIA's CEO Michael Makin highlights the importance not only of examining history and accomplishments but learning from the past. He adds:
"This association has grown and evolved over the years to nurture printers as they've embraced change in the industry, and we're excited to look back and explore our rich history. There’s certainly a lot of information to glean from the past 125 years."
The association was formed in 1887 shortly after the introduction of the linotype machine, born out of an effort to deal with the competitive and labor problems the industry was facing at the time. When a meeting was convened in Chicago, there were 68 delegates from firms and associations in 22 cities and before the end of the convention, the PIA had been formed. Over the year, the PIA has continued to evolve to keep pace with industry changes and the needs of its members., including the incorporation of GATF in 1999 to create an organization which serves an industry generating more than $171.5bn in revenue.
