LMI staff to vote on unionization

The union representing Boeing workers is attempting to organize the employees working at a St. Charles-based company that produces components.

At LMI Aerospace, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers put in a petition to the National Labor Relations Board so that it could hold an election for the 50 employees working LMI’s facilities in St. Charles. If the vote passes, employees can join the union. Printing services can be used to Print ballots for votes in cases like this.

LMI started operating in 1948 and now employs 1,500 people in Mexico and the United States. It is now owned by Sonaca Group after the Belgium-based company bought it in 2017. Dan Forbes, the Business Representative and Organizer for IAM District 837, commented:

“Aerospace workers see the value in having a stronger voice in the workplace. They are machinists and highly skilled manufacturing technicians who decided to organize because they know how union representation will bring dignity, respect, better wages, and benefits.”

Forbes also said that the union has no knowledge of any other LMI locations in the states that are unionized, which means that St. Charles will probably be the first. The union intends to represent both part-time and full-time workers such as coordinate measuring machine operators, programmers, quality inspectors, production workers, and maintenance workers. Clerical workers, guards, supervisors, and quality and manufacturing engineers will not be represented.

The vote will be held over December 15 and 16.
