After three years of lobbying, County Councilman Mike Elam from District 3 has finally convinced the rest of the council to vote in favor of an ordinance that will lead to the creation of the Port Authority.
According to Elam, the state has put aside money that only the Port Authority can use. The state of Missouri has 17 port authorities and they have been receiving state money. Thanks to the new ordinance, St. Charles is now able to receive a share of those funds. Notices about new ordnances can be shared on documents that feature official Letterheads.
When the new ordinance was approved, Councilman Mike Elam commented to say why he had been lobbying in support of a Port Authority, describing not having one as “leaving money on the table.”
The Port Authority Board of Commissioners approved a number of projects, including a $2.5m project created to extend services for water, electric, and sewerage installations to serve what will be the new river terminal located near Augusta. Also, $1m will be used to renovate the river terminal located close to the Lewis and Clark Boat House. These new installations and upgrades will provide a boost to commerce on the river and lay the groundwork for future developments around it.
