The $8m project, complete with a 46-home subdivision, has already gained support from important city officials such as those on the city zoning board. If it gets its final approval, construction will start this summer. People living in an area can be kept informed of developments like this with the help of flyer printing.
Jacquie Vick, who works as a spokesperson for Habitat for Humanity’s St. Charles chapter, stated:
"Almost 23,000 local families find it hard to pay for a home that is safe and healthy. The goal of Habitat is to change these numbers. We do this by constructing affordable housing options for families who might not meet requirements set by normal lending organizations."
However, the plan does have some opponents. Some in the nearby neighborhood of Huntleigh Ridge have expressed concern that these new constructions may bring down their homes’ values.
Habitat for Humanity, a worldwide charity that gives homes to families with low income and disadvantages, has been constructing houses in St. Charles County for nearly 30 years. However, it has never overseen a project this large within the county before.
Applications to live in one on these homes have been accepted since February. Requirements for applicants include living or working in St. Charles County within the last year, passing a credit review, and having an income that is steady, along with showing a need to be included in the affordable homeownership program.
