The St. Charles City-County Library Board adopted a resolution that "indefinitely" postpones the plan's execution in front of around sixty people. Board members instructed library officials to create a new strategy with community involvement to solve the district's financial problems.
Matthew Seeds, a board trustee who helped write the resolution, commented to say:
"We are moving past the May 17 proposal and moving onto other options," "We are not planning on bringing this back."
The proposal is scheduled to be heard by the board in 2025. Some residents of St. Charles County who had been protesting the proposed closures considered the decision to drop the closure plan as a major victory. Poster printing is a common feature of protests.
However, some questioned whether the new proposal would significantly deviate from the previous one, which called for the closure of the three library branches. Those branches are Deer Run in O'Fallon, McClay in St. Charles, and Kisker Road adjacent to Weldon Spring.
Due to district financial issues, library management proposed in May to eliminate three branches. Afterward, administrators admitted that they had not adequately conveyed "the seriousness of our situation."
The people's reaction was quick. Locals expressed their surprise at the suggestion in hundreds of emails and letters to library board members and officials, pleading with them to think again.
