Zoo may raise price for parking
Visitors to the St. Louis Zoo this summer may face higher prices to be able to park in the expansion lot at the site of the former Forest Park Hospital. The current charge is $5, but could go to $10, where it will remain for the summer before dropping again at the end of the season.
This type of seasonal pricing is not new; the zoo currently uses the practice on its south and north lots, where it charges $10 during the off season, but increases the price to $15 for the period March 1 through October 30.
Zoo officials referred to the increase as an experiment, and is only one of the measures the institution has been using to try and increase its revenue. The zoo is over 100 years old, and has accumulated about $60m in deferred maintenance costs for its aging infrastructure.
One measure that could help are bills currently in the Senate and House, that would allow increases in the sales tax rates in several counties, the money to be designated for the zoo specifically. The increases, however, would be capped at 0.125%, and need to win voter approval.
The price change could go into effect by the end of this month.
