Washington University professor honored

A professor of engineering at St. Louis's Washington University was recently elected to the National Academy of Engineering, according to an article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Selection to the Academy is one of the most important honors in the engineering field.

Pratim Biswas is the holder of eight patents and has founded two companies based on some of his inventions. He will be receiving the Fuchs Award, considered to be the highest honor in the aerosol science and engineering field. Recipients of awards like this might consider incorporating the honor into their stationery by using a change to their logo design or adding a new one.

Biswas joined the university in 2000 to assist in reconstructing the previously-eliminated program in environmental engineering sciences. Six years later, the founded the chemical, environmental, and energy engineering department, and is its current chairman. In addition, Biswas is the university's vice chancellor for international programs, as well as McDonnell Academy Global Energy and Environmental Partnership's director. The partnership is a worldwide consortium comprising 35 universities.

The National Academy of Engineering is an independent, private, non-profit institution founded in 1964. The Academy's mission is to enhance the nation's well-being by supporting the engineering profession, as well as gathering insights and expertise from engineers and providing advice on technological and engineering matters to the federal government.

The ceremony inducting Biswas into the Academy will take place in Washington, D.C., on October 6.
