St. Louis' Ronald McDonald Houses celebrate milestone with donation drive

McDonald's has requested that its customers help the company celebrate a ‘Day of Change’ by donating, appropriately enough, change.

The first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia 40 years ago this month, and now the company is asking its customers to remember the occasion with a small donation. Not only that, it is encouraging people to dress up for the anniversary.

McDonald's asked its St. Louis customers to wear red-and-white striped clothes to show they support the charity, and has also asked them to give their spare change to the effort. They encouraged St. Louis patrons to take photos, and share the results on social media, using hashtag #forRMHC.

According to a press release from McDonald's, if every customer worldwide put a penny into the RMHC Donation Box in the restaurant each time they got something to eat, that would add up to more than $250 million the charity could use to help children.

Ronald McDonald Houses are designed to provide healthcare and a “home away from home” for families who are faced with having to bring their children long distances to hospitalize them. The first Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis was opened in 1981, and there are now three.

McDonald's could work with a poster printing company to create in-store displays that make it easy for patrons to find the RMHC Donation Box.
