Road renovations to lead to access point rethink
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is planning to work on Gravois Road in South St. Louis. The agency’s project would change access points to the road in various places.
MoDOT talked to the neighborhood associations of those areas most likely to be affected directly, including Tower Grove East, McKinley Heights, Fox Park, Benton Park West, and Benton Park. The officials discussed their plans to block off streets in the various neighborhoods, which would have a direct and immediate impact on residents.
MoDOT plans to close up to 18 side streets, to the complete surprise of many residents. The agency told residents that closing some of the complex intersections along Gravois would improve traffic flow. Concrete barriers would be used to block access. In addition, Christine Ingrassia, a St. Louis Alderwoman, noted that Gravois is extremely wide in this area, and she believes the city needs to think about crosswalks and bike lines and other improvements.
However, Gravois is a state road, and any work on it will be carried out by MoDOT, which will have to determine the best ways to keep traffic from snarling as the work gets underway.
MoDOT might consider working with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents in the area of construction, giving as accurate a timetable as possible, and suggesting alternative routes for residents to get to work.
