Cardinals raise funds through items under the hammer
The St. Louis Cardinals, long-time rivals of the Chicago Cubs, are running an online auction in order to raise money for cancer research.
Melody Yount, who is the communications manager for the Cardinals organization, says that the public relations departments of all the major league teams have been raising money for about three years in the fight against cancer.
The money raised throughout the league this year will go to LUNGevity, which is the largest nonprofit organization in the country dedicated to fighting lung cancer. The donations will be made in the name of Monica Barlow, who died of lung cancer in February. Barlow was the public relations director for the Baltimore Orioles.
Yount said that the teams' PR people all know one another, see each other frequently throughout the baseball season, and have developed strong friendships.
The items being auctioned off by the Cardinals are often one-of-a-kind, such as a quilt made by Yount's mother saluting the work of various cancer awareness groups. The quilt is part of a package that includes two all-inclusive tickets to a Cardinals game.
Interested parties should move quickly, since the auction ends Thursday, December 11, at 11:00 pm. The Cardinals could work with a banner printing company to create outdoor banners to hang at the stadium, announcing the contest and raising awareness.
