Bosnian restaurant serves authentic food in South St. Louis

Lisa Grozdanic and her husband Armin serve authentic Bosnian food in their South St. Louis restaurant, Yapi Mediterranean Grill, which opened this October.

The pair have an unusual history: Armin was held in a concentration camp in Bosnia for over nine months before he was able to flee the country in 1996. He and his family first went to Germany, then came to St. Louis, where he and Lisa met in high school. His experience led him to try and help the refugee community here by providing hot meals to people who have no way to cook for themselves.

Lisa said that during Ramadan, Armin cooked the nightly meals for two mosques that serve Syrian refugees. Many have no gas or running water, so they are unable to prepare their own food. Armin took food to them to break their fast.

Although the Grozdanics cooked and distributed food to help others, their meals won them both investments and the exposure they needed to open their own restaurant. Their cevapi, a traditional Bosnian dish of ground beef sausage, served with flatbread, sour cream, and onions, was particularly celebrated and the word began to spread. Yapi has daily specials, and also offers American dishes like the ‘Yapi Burger’.

Establishments like this use flyer printing companies to help attract and invite customers.
