Unique show coming to Farmington Hills area

Fans of all those wild 1970s disaster movies have a chance to see a show just for them.

“Disaster!” will be in the area soon to satisfy everyone's craving for infernos, tidal waves, earthquakes, and other natural disasters that seemed to be on movie screens everywhere for an entire decade. The musical draws from more than 30 films for its material, and also features some of the songs from that era including “I Am Woman,” “Hooked on a Feeling,” and “Knock on Wood.” Platform shoes, bell-bottoms, and glitter balls are all part of the fun.

In 1979, a floating casino is opening in New York City, and the glitterati are getting ready to attend the party. The odd assortment of characters includes a expert on disasters, a former disco star, a nun addicted to gambling, and more. The ship goes through a series of disasters leaving the party goers in a comic fight for survival. A review of the show said that the songs

“…serve as the perfect musical punchlines to an already hysterical script.”

Disaster! opens February 19, and runs from 7:30 pm until 9:30 pm at the Farmington Civic Center, a few minutes from Farmington Hills. Additional performances are February 20 at 7.30 pm; February 21 at 7.30 pm; February 22 at 7.30 pm; and February 23, at 2.00 pm. Poster printing is often used to create imaginative advertisements for this type of event.
