The internet is an outstanding tool for research, but can also be dangerous, and Farmington Hills police want to help parents help their children to remain safe online.
To help parents understand dangers of internet usage, the Crime Prevention Section of the Farmington Hills Police Department has scheduled a seminar called Internet Safety for Parents. The seminar will be held in the Farmington Hills City Hall's Council Chambers. The hall is on West Eleven Mile Road.
Technicians from the crime prevention section will talk about internet safety issues facing teens and their parents. They will educate parents about the phone apps currently being used by youngsters, and the dangers arising from the misuse of social media. Print shops can be used to develop suitable materials for events like this.
Among the questionable or dangerous issues that surface online are cyberbullying, online grooming, and self-harm. In many cases, the people behind this sort of behavior benefit from the anonymity of the internet, and the fact that many children and parents do not know what to do to address the issue.
All Farmington Hills residents are welcome to attend the meeting, where there will be light refreshments. However, due to the subject matter to be discussed, no one under 18 will be admitted.
The seminar is scheduled for 6:30 pm tomorrow, June 26.
