Blood drives to be held in Farmington Hills

In response to a blood supply shortage in the U.S. the Red Cross is stepping up its blood drives with several dates planned for blood donations in Farmington.

As an incentive, The Red Cross is offering those who donate blood, plasma or platelets in October a free Zaxby’s signature sandwich certificate, or for those who are not near a Zaxby’s, a $5 e-gift card to their choice of merchant.

The Red Cross is particularly seeking African-American donors to fill the need for blood among sickle cell anemia patients. Among the 100,000 in the U.S. who have this disease, the vast majority are African-American, and over half of African-American donors have blood that offers the best match for blood transfusions.

Generally state laws require donors be a minimum of 17 years old. Regardless of age donors must meet certain weight and height requirements. Information like this is often made easier to present through poster printing.

The Red Cross will be at the Farmington Hills Blood Donation Center located at 31150 Haggerty Rd. at the following dates and times:

• October 1 to 3, 8 to 10, and 15 from 7:15 am to 2:30 pm
• October 4 to 5 and 11 to 12, from 11:45 am to 7:00 pm
• October 7 and 14 from 8:45 am to 4:00 pm

The Red Cross requests that the donor schedule an appointment before arriving at the blood drive. Appointments can be made online at the American Red Cross website, via its app or by phoning 1-800 RED CROSS.
