Stevensville residents who are brave enough to take on the frigid waters of Chesapeake Bay will soon have a chance to freeze for charity.
The Maryland State Police has organized its 19th annual Polar Bear Plunge, and participants of all ages are welcome. The event is a fundraiser for Maryland's Special Olympics, and hopeful polar bears must have raised a minimum of $75 in pledges to take part. Spectators can watch the fun free of charge.
Also scheduled for the day is PlungeFest, a festival in a heated venue. The party includes food, vendors selling accessories and clothing, children's activities, and live entertainment.
Parking for the two events is available at several locations, including Stevensville's Kent Island High School. A shuttle will be provided from there to the beach.
Event organizers who are handling parking in Stevensville might want to work with a banner printing company to create a large outdoor sign, clearly marking the area at which the shuttle will pick up and drop off participants.
The event takes place tomorrow, January 24, beginning at 8:00 am. There is a pee-wee and family plunge slated for 11:00 am, with two more mass plunges on the scheduled for 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. The location is Sandy Point State Park, about 13 miles from Stevensville. For further information, visit the event website.
