Chesapeake Paddlers Association, Inc. will present a free Cold Water Safety Workshop in mid-January.
The workshop will be for anyone using a small craft in cold water. This includes anything used in canoeing, angling, paddleboarding, rowing, sailing, hunting, kayaking, surf skiing, board sailing or motorboating. The course will teach dressing for cold water, cold water safety’s five Golden Rules, and safe kayaking in cold water.
A discussion will follow the opening of the event, covering topics such as cold water dangers, immersion’s four stages, and various misconceptions and myths. Other topics will be insulation principles, body protection, and proper use and testing of gear. This session will end with a talk on fatalities and close calls.
Catriona Miller will conduct the class and she will be assisted by remote by Director of the National Center for Cold Water Safety, Moulton Avery.
An on-water session will be held at Kent Island Boat Dock at 2:30 pm. Personal Cold Weather Paddling Gear is recommended but not required. Attendees can either get into the water and swim-test their gear under the watchful eyes of volunteers from the Chesapeake Paddlers Association or watch from the shore.
Members of cold water craft clubs or organizations that attend events such as this occasionally get some flyer printing done to invite other members to participate.
This Cold Water Safety Workshop will be held January 19 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm at cult Classic Brewery 1169 Shopping Center Road.
