International firm seeks startups in Maryland

The Israeli crowdfunding company OurCrowd has decided to generate business by engaging with the Maryland/Israel Development Center (MIDC).

OurCrowd has concentrated on Israeli firms in the past, but it is now trying to make investments in Maryland. Its chief executive officer, Jon Medved, has said that the state has a strong business community.

Crowdfunding can be beneficial for organizations at an early stage in their evolution. If OurCrowd wants to get its message across in Maryland, it could use local business card printing in Stevensville. The Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore is a partner in the MIDC, as well as the Department of Business and Economic Development for Maryland.

MIDC chairperson Rob Frier has told Crowdfund Insider:

“We’re excited about the partnership with OurCrowd. It will give Maryland companies access to a potential new funding source and help Israeli companies enter the U.S. market further expanding the Maryland/Israel trade relationship.”

OurCrowd is more exclusive than some of its crowdfunding competitors. This is in part because investment values begin at the $10,000 level. However, it is also because the companies that participate have to gain approval to start off with.

OurCrowd was launched back in 2012. Since then, it has managed to obtain about $100m. More than 50 companies have obtained significant sums from the process, with investments made by residents of nearly 100 countries.
