Orchestra to use grant money to expand education program

A recent news conference saw Teddy Abrams, music director of the Louisville Orchestra, team up with the organization Hip Hop into Learning (HHN2L) to announce that a $500,000 grant will be used to expand HHN2L into more schools.

HHN2L utilizes rap and other music to assist youngsters in learning and expressing themselves. It was revealed at the news conference that programs over the summer and spring break would be added to serve 30 to 40 kids in grades 5 to 12.

Among the results of HHN2L is a program commonly known as The Real Young Prodigys. A song created by the program, called “Crown,” played a significant role in the passage of the Crown Act, a Louisville ordinance prohibiting hairstyle-based discrimination.

Banner printing services are used to celebrate the funding of programs as well as the resulting benefits they provide.

The source of the money to expand HHN2L is the Lewis Prize for Music’s $500,000 Accelerator Award which was given to the organization in December 2022. The grant is to support and continue new efforts for sustaining community progress. According to the group, in addition to giving more students an opportunity to take part in the program, HHN2L will provide feeder programs to Perry Elementary School, Hudson Middle School, Meyzeek Middle School, and The Academy at Shawnee.

The upcoming summer program will take place June 5 to 9, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at Lo’s Rap School. Visit the HHN2L website to learn more.
