Kennedy Bridge lane closures to last over a year
Extensive repairs on Louisville’s Kennedy Bridge, which began at the end of February, will continue well into 2026.
The bridge’s left three lanes closed the end of February to enable work crews to effect immediate repairs to the expansion joints on the bridge. According to a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet news release, two lanes will remain open to take traffic across the Ohio River on Interstate 65 South into Indiana.
Print shops can provide signage for construction areas.
The immediate need is to repair the damaged joints that will be followed this summer by major constructions to replace those joints with new ones. The expansion joints have the appearance of interlocking fingers and are designed to permit the bridge’s deck to expand and contract with temperature change while preventing the cracking of the bridge’s concrete.
Since soon after the bridge was converted to one-way traffic in 2021 problems were found and the state has made temporary repairs in 2021 and again in 2024, but a more permanent solution is needed.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear explained saying:
Presently, Hall Contracting of Kentucky Inc. has a $6.9 million contract for overseeing the process of fabricating replacement joints.
Motorists can anticipate intermittent lane closures until the project winds to a close in April 2026.

“... we're manufacturing steel joints now, and once that is complete, full replacement will start by this summer."
