Work on Gurnee trail expected to start soon
Work to connect a Gurnee path with the Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve trail system could start soon, according to an article in the Daily Herald. The connection will be made at Dada Drive and Route 45.
It is expected that the forest board of Lake County will approve a contract with Copenhaver Construction, based in in Gilberts, who will built the trail link and any work associated with it. The contract is for $393,791.
The new 0.4-mile connection would run from the northeast section of Rollins Savanna, which already has a trail system in place, to Dada Drive and Route 45. Plans are to abandon a grass trail currently connected with Sunshine Avenue to the west of Route 45.
In addition to building the trail, Copenhaver would modify the intersection's traffic signal, add concrete ramps to comply with the ADA, and add pavement markings to a pedestrian crosswalk. The project also calls for the removal of parking areas, an entrance from Route 45, and asphalt roads, all left by the previous owner.
The forest district has several directives, among them to provide connections and public access to its facilities. In order to accomplish this, the district and Gurnee have been working together. Officials on projects like this could use brochure printing to describe the new amenities.
The work should start in May, and be completed by November 1.
