Three-month program to see police and citizens learn together

Gurnee residents who want to learn more about the inner workings of their police department will have an opportunity to do so soon, when the Citizen Police Academy classes get underway.

According to a notice on the city's website, the academy consists of 36 hours of instruction and is designed to give Gurnee residents practical knowledge of the policies, procedures, and practices used by the Gurnee Police Department. The course comprises weekly classes of three hours each, conducted for 12 weeks.

The classes are interactive, and provide students with hands-on experience when it is practical to do so. The classes are taught by supervisors, police officers, and others with knowledge in specific areas of law enforcement.

The idea behind the academy is to familiarize residents with the way the police carry out their jobs so that citizens can make informed judgments about the local police and the way they handle their duties. The police department hopes that by explaining how and why it does what it does, some of the misunderstandings surrounding police work can be dispelled, while the bond between officers and the community is strengthened.

Classes begin February 26 and end May 21. There is no cost to attend, but students must be at least 18 and have no felony convictions. The department could work with a poster printing company to create posters announcing the academy.
