Steam's up in Gurnee

Gurnee residents who are fans of steam locomotives had a treat recently, when locomotive No. 4014, a Union Pacific “Big Boy,” steamed through the village.

The locomotive was making a “Great Race Across the Midwest,” traveling throughout the central states. On the day it came through Gurnee, No. 4014 left Butler, Wisconsin early in the morning for Chicago, where it spent the weekend. On its way to the Windy City, the engine roared through Gurnee, thrilling steam buffs. People were able to get a good look at the machine, because U.S. 41 and the Union Pacific tracks parallel each other for most of the stretch through the village.

The No. 4014 “Big Boy” is one of the biggest steam engines ever built, weighing in at more than 1.2 million pounds. Only 25 of these locomotives were manufactured, designed to haul heavy loads over steep terrain.

The Gurnee Police closed Grandville Avenue between Northwest Avenue and U.S. 41 from 10.00 am until 11.00 am the morning the engine was due to come through the village, to make it easier for people to enjoy the locomotive. Street parking was available in neighborhoods around Grandville Avenue, Magnolia Avenue, and Waveland Avenue, but visitors were asked to obey the speed limits in the various neighbors, and avoid blocking driveways.
