Plaza takes shape in Gurnee

Construction work on the Richard A. Welton Village Plaza in Gurnee is progressing, and officials hope to have it open in time for an annual community festival.

The plaza honors Richard A. Welton, the longest-serving mayor in the village's history. According to Scott Drabicki, the village's engineer, construction goals are being met, and the first project finished is a pergola. Most recently, crews built sidewalks, and are continuing with additional concrete work.

Officials also said they hope that some of the landscaping will be done in time for the festival, which takes place in August. They are particularly looking forward to having colorful flowers in place around the plaza.

In addition to the already completed pergola, which stands on a 60-foot semicircle, the plaza will include seating, plantings of perennials, rain gardens, and a bicycle rack. Markers are planned that will describe Welton's contributions to the village, and milestones Gurnee has reached in its history. The plaza sits on one acre of public land that lies just to the east of the Des Plaines River. Public works, the police headquarters, and the village hall were once located here.

Communities like these can benefit from working with banner printing companies, which can create sturdy, all-weather, festive banners suitable for hanging in outdoor locations. Banners can be reused, and add a sense of fun to any type of event.
