New ride planned at Gurnee amusement park

A new coaster is planned for Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, according to a recent announcement by the park.

The Tsunami Surge will be the world’s tallest water coaster, according to Six Flags officials. The coaster will be located in the park's Riptide Bay area, which is part of the Hurricane Harbor section. Tsunami Surge will be 86 feet tall, higher than an eight story building, and feature propulsion technology that uses blasts of water to push riders uphill. Three of these “blasts” occur during the ride.

The coaster's top speed is 28 mph, and it features five hairpin turns, as well as five sharp drops. The coaster totals 950 feet in length, and sends riders through tunnels and twists as well as the drops and turns. AquaLucent will be supplying the visual effects that will create bursts of patterns and color, the first time such technology has been used on any ride at Six Flags.

Water coasters can be seen as a combination of a roller coaster and water slide, and may be powered by conveyor belts, linear induction motors, or water jets, as in Six Flags. Riders usually sit on a raft or similar platform, rather than simply going with the water as in a traditional water slide.

The new water coaster should be in operation by 2020. Banner printing can be used to create fun decorations to celebrate openings like this.
