Gurnee street will stay closed for now
Gurnee's Old Grand Avenue, where work is being done, will remain closed for a little longer.
The street was recently closed to enable Canadian Pacific Railroad workers to perform maintenance on a railroad bridge that crosses over the avenue.
Gurnee officials said the maintenance work requires for Old Grand Avenue to be shut down entirely between North 1st Street and O'Plaine Road. The closure is to allow the railroad's repair crews to have access to the site, as well as making sure that members of the public remain safe. The work includes construction of a walkway to enhance the safety of train crews when they operate at night, and repairs to concrete retention walls.
People who need to get to Viking Middle School, or who want to visit Viking Park, can access either location via O'Plaine Road, and Old Grand Avenue, eastbound.
The Canadian Pacific expects to finish the work by January 15. Gurnee is one of the stops the Canadian Pacific makes when the railroad runs its annual Holiday Train. This year, the train, which features 14 cars decorated with hundreds of thousands of LED lights and is almost 1,000 feet long, stopped at Viking Park.
Village officials could help drivers by working with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for residents, explaining the time line of the Old Grand Avenue shutdown, and suggesting alternate routes.
