Gurnee reaches out to walkers and cyclists

Gurnee has formed an advisory committee to find ways to make the village more pedestrian-friendly and easier for bicyclists to traverse.

The committee includes Susie Kuruvilla, the executive director of the Gurnee Park District, who has been integral to the Go Gurnee initiative that the park system supports. Go Gurnee encourages village residents to walk for a minimum of 30 minutes daily to improve their health.

Kuruvilla believes Gurnee is a great place to live, and thinks that many residents would like to get out and get some exercise, and use the opportunity to connect with friends and family. Improving the opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors would help everyone, she believes.

Gurnee residents were able to tell the village what they would like to see via an online survey conducted during the summer of 2016. During the two-week period the survey was available, 430 residents provided feedback to officials. The residents would like to see connections between trails improved, pedestrian crossings upgraded, and new sidewalks built. Other suggestions included building sidewalks in all the business parks in the village, and adding pedestrian paths to bus stops.

Funding could be a challenge, but residents said they would prefer using money from a budget surplus, or diverting some funds from capital improvements to programs helping bikers and pedestrians.

Communities like this can benefit by working with flyer printing companies, which can create detailed mailers for residents describing issues and concerns.
