Gurnee parks encourage residents to get outdoors
The Gurnee Park District is getting the village's parks ready for spring, and officials want to get people outside to play.
Shaw, University, and Westgate Parks have been updated to include tot lots where children will find many different activities. Since spring weather in Illinois is extremely unpredictable, so dirt or woodchips have been replaced with turf in many playgrounds to help make them mud-free and more enjoyable.
The parks that have mud-free areas include Ravinia Park and Village Park. A third mud-free park, University Park, will not open until later in the year. Events like this can be even more successful if officials use poster printing to create welcoming signs.
The department also calls attention to the GO GURNEE Walking Club, which is meant for adults, and helps get people out-of-doors and moving. The GO Walking Club meets Saturdays and is free for anyone who wants to take part. Members of the club become friends, and find the camaraderie helps them to stick to their wellness and health goals by walking every day for at least 30 minutes.
The park district is also planning events for later in the spring. They are scheduling a family-oriented baseball outing to Miller Park in Milwaukee, home of the Milwaukee Brewers, on April 16. They are also asking people to save the day of April 13 for Gurnee's annual Easter Egg Hunt.
