Gurnee hopes to gain international awareness

Gurnee officials are hoping the village will be able to attract international trade, after a meeting with AKHAN Semiconductor included a South Korean trade representative.

The meeting on April 5 focused on AKHAN Semiconductor, which is headquartered in Gurnee. The company makes diamond-film, which are cutting-edge semiconductors that companies in South Korea might use in their consumer electronics products. If the company is able to secure a contract, it would give Gurnee a start toward building an international reputation.

Gurnee's mayor Kristina Kovarik and the village's economic development director, Ellen Dean, participated in the meeting. Also present were U.S. representatives Randy Hultgren and Robert Dold, and state senator Melinda Bush. They met with Adam Khan, the founder of AKHAN, and General Soo Deuk Sohn, of South Korea. Mayor Kovarik said the development organization would assist AKHAN in establishing a South Korean presence.

Benefits to Gurnee of AKHAN's move are indirect, but could be significant. The village would start building its reputation as a supporter of international trade, which would also create jobs. For his part, General Sohn said working with the semiconductor company could assist South Korea in its growing technology, science, and engineering industry. If an agreement is reached, AKHAN would add equipment to its Gurnee plant, and could create jobs.

Gurnee officials might consider creating presentation folders and compiling information to distribute to other companies and organizations considering an international presence.
