Gurnee finishing up work on plaza
Nearly three years after beginning construction on the Richard A. Welton Village Plaza in Gurnee, workers are finally putting the finishing touches on the project.
By mid-June, the village expects to lay decorative brick pavers in circles left specifically for them in the sidewalk. New benches will also be installed, and the plaza will be landscaped, making the one-acre park attractive to residents and encouraging them to enjoy themselves outdoors.
Even though it’s still unfinished, the plaza is already boasting blooming flowers, and vines that are climbing up a semi-circular pergola. Kristina Kovarik says the plaza is beautiful and peaceful, and she’s as impatient as anyone else to see the plaza finished. She’s looking forward to seeing it used as a meeting place, as well as a memorial to Mayor Welton.
Welton served Gurnee for over 30 years, first as a village trustee from 1970-1973, and then as mayor, His tenure lasted from 1973 until 2001, and during that period, the village experienced its largest growth. Both Gurnee Mills and Marriott’s Great America, which is now known as Six Flags Great America, opened in Gurnee while he was in office.
The next plaza sits on the old site of the village hall, a fitting location for a memorial to a man who shaped the community.
Projects like this can benefit if officials work with brochure printers to create illustrated booklets as mementos for residents and visitors alike.
