Gurnee deputy police chief retires

Saundra Campbell, Gurnee's deputy police chief, retired recently after 25 years with the department, according to an article in the Daily Herald.

Kevin Woodside, the chief, called her an “enormously talented police officer and leader” who will be greatly missed.

Brian Smith, deputy chief, said the department will also miss Campbell's empathy. When Smith first joined the department 18 years ago, Campbell was his patrol sergeant. Smith said Campbell cared deeply about the wellbeing of her colleagues, and took an interest in her fellow officers beyond their careers with the police.

Campbell's concern for other goes far beyond the police. She has been a volunteer at Gurnee's Zacharias Sexual Abuse Center for the last 27 years, and currently sits on the board of the organization as one of its vice presidents. Jennifer Yonan, the center's executive director, says Campbell began her work with the center as a medical advocate. Campbell would get together with victims of sexual and domestic violence, and provide support as well as information on what steps they could take next.

Campbell first joined the Gurnee Police Department in 1992. In 1999, she was promoted to sergeant. She was made a patrol division commander in 2011 and promoted to deputy chief in 2014. In line with her community concern, Campbell asks that people who are considering giving her a gift instead donate a children's book to Bernie's Book Bank.

This type of change is important to a community, so officials might like to work with a postcard printing company to create an announcement for residents.
