Gurnee beer festival brings in money for local organizations

The first ever craft beer festival held in Gurnee netted $17,500 for American Legion Post 771.

Gurnee mayor Kristina Kovarik presented James Huisel, the post's strategic planning chairman, with a check for $17,500 at a meeting of the village board, held Monday, November 2.

The festival, which was entitled the ‘Legions of Craft Beer’, took place October 3 in a tent near Gurnee Mills. The festival was organized by the village itself on behalf of the Legion, and Lake County Honor Flight. The Honor Flight is a nonprofit organization that flies veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials. They received $5,800 from the beer bash.

Huisel explained the money the Legion received will go toward funding youth scholarships and other various programs. Some of the money will help pay for the post's co-sponsorship of ‘Women at War’, a play set to be performed on November 13 at 7:00 pm in Grayslake. The play will be presented after a veterans' fair.

The beer festival brought together a number of food trucks and beers from approximately 30 breweries, while Chicago-area bands entertained.

Since the beer bash was such as success, Gurnee officials could build on it by creating brochures that describe the celebration in detail, and ask residents to look for the second one taking place next year.
