Gurnee announces new academy

Gurnee is one of many communities that gives citizens a chance to learn more about how their government works by studying its operations.

City officials recently announced the dates for the upcoming 2020 Youth Citizen Police Academy, a course designed specifically for high school students.

The youth police academy attendees will learn about almost every aspect of law enforcement including defensive tactics, firearms, the work of the canine unit, traffic enforcement, investigation, patrol, and more. A lunch will be provided each day, and there is no charge to attend the course.

The idea for the academy came from Tami Martin, who retired after 24 years on the force, and is now a public education specialist for the department. Martin runs the Citizens Police Academy, a course for adults, and thought it would be good to have a similar program available to high schoolers, especially those interested in law enforcement.

In order to be considered for a place in the academy, applicants must be able to pass background investigations, be in good standing in their high school, have reliable transportation, and possess good moral character. Anyone interested may pick up an application at the Student Services office in Warren Township High School, or at the Gurnee Police Department. Applicators can also be downloaded online.

Applications must be received by 4:00 pm on June 26, and the Academy will run from July 27 through August 1. Print shops can produce materials for courses like this.
