Go Gurnee kicks off a healthy month
Approximately 300 people gathered at Viking Park in Gurnee on May 1 to kick off the Go Gurnee community movement.
The public was invited to the free event, which was designed to encourage attendees to commit to walking at least 30 minutes per day throughout this month.
Parents and their children participated in a free raffle, listened to a talk by Susie Kuruvilla, the Gurnee Park District's executive director, and got T-shirts. Mascots such as Woodland Community School District 50s Wiley the Wildcat, and the Rainforest Cafe's Cha Cha the Frog were in attendance, as were superheroes and several Disney princesses. They joined with residents on a 30-mintue walk.
The park district and the Go Gurnee Champions are urging residents to walk every day at 6:30 pm, with their families, neighbors, and friends, throughout May. They can walk on the city's trails, in a local park, or in their neighborhood. Those Gurnee residents who could not attend the kickoff, but who would like to have a bracelet and log to record their walks can pick up the items at any of the Gurnee Park District's community centers.
Kuruvilla said she expects the entire community will embrace Go Gurnee, leading everyone to develop a happier, healthier lifestyle.
Gurnee officials could work with a printing company to create promotional products to give to residents who stick with the Go Gurnee effort.
