Boise to set up early childhood program

The city of Boise is moving ahead with its plan to initiate pre-kindergarten classes.

The city’s Director of Community Partnerships briefed the mayor and council on the plans for the program, and has received unanimous support for the project. If everything goes according to plan, the proposal, which is entitled The City of Boise Early Childhood Project, could start up as soon as next fall.

The plan is to offer three-hour classes five days a week to 60 children who meet the economic criteria. It will be offered at Hawthorne Elementary and Whitney Elementary. The startup cost for the program will be $262,000, with ongoing costs of $182.000 per year. It is hoped that the private sector will help contribute to meeting these expenses through grants, endowments, and contributions from not-for-profit groups.

There city council will be updated in April about the project, and assuming all goes well, a budget could be drawn up in May. Once staff is hired, the families who will take part will be selected and the classes will soon ensue.

A project like this can require the use of a variety of printed materials to get up and running. A printing company will be able to provide these, as well as custom printed items for use when teaching the children, such as coloring sheets, classroom schedules, and teacher record Books.
