Boise bird lovers have been asked to lend their hands-on support to an event that will help to ensure the long-term survival of some of their local feathered friends.
The crew at Intermountain Bird Observatory will be spending a morning banding songbirds, and birders who come out will be able to get a close up look at the different species that will be caught, measured, weighed and tagged before they are released. Visitors may even be able to play a role in releasing them by allowing their hand to be used as a platform for them to take off from.
This event is open to all ages, and while it is free to participate, the organizer noted that it costs the group $7 per visitor to host the function, so donations will be greatly appreciated. The data collected will be used to aid in studying migration patterns and overall health of the species observed. Guests are encouraged to arrive before 10:00 am to have the best chance of seeing the birds up close and personal. Brochure printing can be used to create informational materials that can be given out during this type of occasion.
The Intermountain Bird Observatory Boise River Research Station is located in the Boise River Greenbelt. The morning of bird banding will be held on June 6, starting at 7:00 am, and the observatory’s Facebook page contains more details about this opportunity to spend the morning with some local fine feathered friends.
