Hialeah cooks up a good time

An interesting series of events is taking place in Hialeah, and there is still time to get in on the fun.

The city has paired up with Common Threads, a non-profit organization, to present Nutrition and Cooking Workshops in parks throughout the city. The events began this month, but more are scheduled for May.

Linda Novick O’Keefe, artist Jesus Salgueiro, and chef Art Smith founded Common Threads in 2003. The trio spent time together cooking for families in New York who were impacted by the 9/11 attacks, and recognized the power food has to bring people together. They also understood that many families find it impossible, for many reasons, to cook healthy meals. This might be due to difficulties finding fresh ingredients, or having the time to make cooking a priority.

Common Threads provides opportunities for families and children to cook together and learn how to make appealing, nutritious, and affordable food choices, no matter where they live. Professional chefs lead the workshops. Organizers of this type of event can use flyer printing to create instruction sheets for attendees.

The upcoming schedule is for workshops in Slade Park on May 6, in Milander Park on May 18, and in Goodlet Park on May 25. All the events begin at 6:30 pm. The first 25 people to RSVP to register will be able to take part for free. Interested people will need to email Recreation@hialeahfl.gov.
