History
Greeley is named for Horace Greeley, the legendary editor of the “New York Tribune,” who may or may not have said: “Go west young man.” Greeley came to the area in 1859, along with hundreds of thousands of others, during what was known as the “Pike's Peak Gold Rush” or the “Colorado Gold Rush.” These “Fifty-niners,” as they were known, were similar to the “Forty-niners” who had gone to California ten years earlier.
From the very beginning, Greeley seems to have been a community eager to keep up with the latest developments. Although it was agricultural in the beginning, residents had telephones by 1883, and electric lights brightened the downtown area by 1886. There were cars on the streets by 1910, and KFKA radio was one of the first stations to broadcast in the United States. In 1928, the Greeley Municipal Airport was constructed, and today the city continues to grow and change.
