Underwater plant to be celebrated

An event highlighting various aspects of an aquatic plant will be taking place in early October over the course of two days.

Sure to entertain San Rafael residents, the California Seaweed Festival gives locals the chance to learn all there is to know about seaweed, including the varieties there are and their many uses. Some of these uses include art, sustainable tech, farming, and cooking. Workshops and other activities will bring an interactive element to the festival, giving people the chance to explore on a deeper level. Booths, galleries, and exhibits are also present, with educational materials and experts.

This non-profit event that was created two years ago by Simona Augyte and Janet Kubler. Both women are PhD holders and have worked for decades with the plant, and wanted to create something to help local people learn more about what was just off the shore. This was done with aid from the California Sea Grant. Flyer printing will often be used to promote similar activities.

The first day of the festival will be shorter, mainly focusing on talks with several experts, as well as a walk. These events will run from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm on October 7. From 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on October 8, the full array of festival activities will take place. Entry to the event is free, and open to all ages. The venue is the Bay Conference Center, located in Tiburon.
