Six-week festival celebrates the 1960s

The San Rafael Rocks Summer festival is taking place this June and July. Presented by the Jerry Garcia Foundation, it will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of influential rock band The Grateful Dead. Proceeds from the festival will support Drawbridge and CFI Education.

The festival will start off with The Art of Rock Legends, which will run for the entire festival. The exhibition and sale will feature artwork by 60s musicians such as Jerry Garcia, Grace Slick, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, and Janis Joplin. Illustrator Peter Max has donated a signed Grateful Dead lithograph that can be personalized for its buyer. The works of several rock photographers will also be on display, as will some of the best rock Posters.

There will be a preview party which will coincide with Art Works Downtown 2nd Friday Art Walk. The rock poster display and the Peter Max lithographs, meanwhile, will probably interest those in San Rafael who work for poster printing companies.

Other events coming up as part of the festival are a rock and roll film festival, a block party, and a musical benefit.

San Rafael Rocks will take place from June 12 to July 24. The Art of Rock Legends is showing at Art Works Downtown for the duration, and its preview party will be held on June 12 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. For more information, visit the festival website.
