Assemblyman requests suggestions to replace bridge

The bridge that connects Marin County and Richmond has always been a big headache for drivers, which is why a member of the North Bay Assembly is suggesting it should be replaced.

A website has been launched where locals can give their ideas. People can also make their suggestions on social media with the hashtag #RichmondBridge.

The Assemblyman, Marc Levine is behind the movement to replace the bridge. He stated that:

“Nothing lasts forever, including workhorse bridges like the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Now is the time for our community to begin a conversation about what type of bridge will meet our long term needs.”

The current bridge is more than 60 years old. It has recently been beset with structural problems such as when the concrete expansion joints collapsed and lanes had to be closed for months while it was repaired.

The bridge is also struggling to keep pace with the growing number of cars on the road. Officials were forced to make a third lane out of the shoulder on the bridge’s lower deck to ease congestion during busy periods. A barrier was also installed on the top deck so that pedestrians and cyclists are able to use it as crossing for the first time in the bridge’s history.

A $20m project to reinforce the bridge is already scheduled for 2020 and it will be funded by money from state gas taxes.
