Socktober comes to Rancho Cucamonga

Students at Valle Vista Elementary participated in a socks-for-the-homeless program inspired by YouTube star Bobby Novak, also known as Kid President.

Novak’s idea was picked up on by fifth-grader Dominic Paris who took it to his teacher and principal, which is how 19 classes at Valle Vista Elementary came to collect new socks for the needy. Each classroom had a goal of collecting 100 pairs of socks by the deadline of October 29.

Paris’s has inspired other students in his class to come forward with their own ideas for community service projects, according to Luanne Weaver, principal of Valle Vista. In addition to the good these projects can do for the community, the students can learn a lot about the organization and the importance of promoting a fundraising event or clothing drive.

The cost associated with flyer printing, or poster printing and other promotional tools can be incorporated into math class, while selecting text could be part of an English assignment.

Paris was hoping the school could collect at least 1,000 pairs. However, when the sock drive blew past that goal with three days left, Paris set another goal of 2,000 pairs.

People Against Abuse and Neglect of Children International based in Rancho Cucamonga, Claremont’s Shoes that Fit, and the Foothill Family Shelter located in Upland will all be recipients of the donated socks.
