Los Osos High School, competing against 40 other schools, came in third in the annual Solar Cup competition held at Lake Skinner.
The Solar Cup competition has been taking place for the last 13 years; it teaches the application of math, science, problem solving, engineering in resource conservation and management. Over an eight month period students attended technical workshops as they built their solar powered boat, creating technical reports as they progress. Teams even created their own 30-second public service announcements.
Team Heliosos as the Los Osos team is known, was sponsored by the Inland Empire Utilities Agency and Cucamonga Valley Water District (CVWD). It was the fourth year of sponsorship from CVWD and the fourth year Team Heliosos has taken part in the Solar Cup competition.
Teams are scored individually on several aspects of the competition such as their PSA Video, endurance and sprint races in the water, and technical reports as well as being scored for their overall performance. In addition to placing third in the overall competition the Los Osos team also placed first in technical awards, and came in second in endurance and for its public service announcement.
Although it was not part of the competition this year, perhaps in coming years, in addition to a PSA Video, teams could submit a brochure they designed and contracted with a Print company to produce.Get a Free Quote for Print
