Rancho Cucamonga gets environmental recognition

Rancho Cucamonga was a hot contender in a recent statewide competition in which cities were judged on how well they reduced carbon emissions.

On October 22, the cities were recognized at the meeting of the California Air Resources Board. Rancho Cucamonga came in third behind Riverside and Claremont in the Cool California City Challenge. In this, the second year of the challenge, 10 cities participated with a total of 4,000 households.

City residents were encouraged to engage in activities that would reduce their carbon footprint. Simple examples of this include using non-polluting means of transportation, such as walking or riding a bike, as well as changing to energy efficient light bulbs. Slightly more ambitions actions might be the installation of solar roofing panels.

Residents were spurred on by community efforts, social media, and other online tools. The efforts appear to have worked in building momentum for the program, because 40% more households participated in this year's challenge than in 2013. Moreover, greenhouse gases were reduced an additional 60%.

Officials believe the success of the Cool California City Challenge demonstrates how cities can play a significant role in California’s efforts to fight climate change. With the assistance of a Print company, Brochures explaining the how and why of reducing one’s carbon footprint can educate households could make next year’s challenge results even more impressive.
